We aim to keep the transition from class to class in Key Stage 1 as smooth as possible. With this in mind, there will be some similarities e.g. morning activities, play-based learning etc. More structured lessons, particularly English and Maths, are steadily introduced as the year progresses.
- Weekly homework:
In Key Stage 1, we expect children to read every day as part of their homework. Children will also come home with spellings each week. The weekly spellings will be placed in your child's reading diary and they will complete a spelling quiz the following Friday. On occasion, we will also send home practical tasks linked to our topic.
- Reading at home:
Reading is the key to all areas of learning. This is why we reward children for the number of reading experiences they complete at home each week. Please make a note in their reading journal of the reading you have completed at home so that we can count it towards stickers on their bookmark. It is beneficial for children to read a range of materials around the home, including: school library books, library books, fiction and non-fiction.
We would greatly appreciate any parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles etc. who could volunteer to listen to readers. Please pop in to see us if you can spare some time to hear readers in our classes.
All clothes and bags should be clearly named.
School Uniform: Grey or black skirt/trousers/pinafore dress/shorts, white shirt/polo shirt, green jumper, white/grey/black socks and black school shoes (Velcro or laces) NOT trainers/boots/sandals.
Indoor PE kit: Black/blue shorts and white t-shirt, socks and black plimsolls.
Outdoor PE kit: Black/blue tracksuit bottoms, white t-shirt, trainers and a jumper.
Year 1 and 2 have PE planned into their timetable twice a week. It is best if PE kits are kept in school all week as timetables are subject to change.
Children will change their library books every Friday where possible. Please ensure that their book is in their book bag on this day. Children will not be allowed to take home another book until their current loan is returned.
Food and Drink
Children in Year 1 and 2 will continue to be entitled to free fruit or vegetables every day at break time. All children will need to bring in a water bottle. This bottle is in addition to the drink in their lunch box and must contain water only. All children in Year 1 and 2 are entitled to a free hot meal at lunch time. Please ensure you have filled in the dietary requirements form and handed it to the school office. Your child may bring a packed lunch if you prefer. Children who have a packed lunch will not be offered a hot meal.
Attendance and Punctuality
Good attendance is crucial for your child’s educational development. We are very keen for the school to improve its attendance rate and therefore any requests for time off should be sent directly to the head teacher who will discuss this with you further. If your child is unwell, the school office should be notified as soon as possible. The school registers close at 8.55am. If you arrive after this time your child will be marked as late and you will have to enter the school through the office.
This is a reminder that the trim trail and climbing frame should not be used before or after school.
